Is shutter installation really as difficult as some retailers would lead you to believe, or can you do it yourself and save the cost? Having been an on-line shutter retailer for a number of years, specialising in
DIY shutters while still offering a professional fitting service, I can honestly say it is feasible for even a DIY novice to install their own shutters and achieve a professional finish. However, as always there is an option for a company to come and install for you if you don't want the inconvenience or don't have the ability to install yourself.
Measuring is the key, as if you measure correctly your shutters will only fit one way – the right way. Choose a company who is willing to offer information on measuring and fitting, or who has an expert you can discuss your queries with to get advice. Make sure that person has actually installed themselves, so has experience of dealing with a variety of different windows and will know what to ask you in order to help. You may need to make a paper template of any tricky corners or shapes, but don't let you put this off as it really is a simple process, and this will ensure any products you purchase are made to fit your windows correctly.
Some companies offer a kit to help you install, or may be able to provide ready assembled products with all the hardware attached. This makes installing easier, as there is less to do and therefore less room for error. It will also save you time trying to put together things yourself. However, be realistic, as there will still be a need to put some parts together as it would be difficult to deliver something fully assembled. With some kits this will only mean putting the frame together and inserting hinge pins, a simple task requiring minimal effort and with little room for error. This will mean all you have left to do is screw the assembled shutter panels and or frame into the window. Some shutter kits mean the use of a sub-frame or battens, but again this is extremely simple and effective for spacing panels and louvers away from window handles.
If you are unsure, ask the company who provided the products for advice. Many will offer
shutter installation instructions to guide you through the process, and the expert who helped you measure may also be able to advise you on fitting.
Don't rush, it's important to prepare your work area and make sure you have everything to hand before you start the task. If the boxes your products arrive in are labelled, move them to the right room or work area prior to unpacking so that the chance of damage caused in the home is minimised.
Window shutters have increased in popularity over the last few decades, and many more people are choosing this option to dress their window, create a particular style or just to solve the problems of controlling light, ventilation and privacy. Whether you are keen on DIY or would rather have someone to install for you, shutter installation doesn't have to be difficult if you would like to have a go at doing it yourself.
